Has it Been Three Years?

… and three months, apparently. Which is probably a good time to make note of my baby’s birthday in July. Three years ago (and three months) she decided to rather abruptly join our family — on her own schedule of course.

And as I think about that day, it is more and more fitting, because Sarah is anything but docile. She loves being independent (and yet still loves to hold my hand). And while she can be a pill (with high drama), she can also be the cutest, sweetest little girl.

We had a little birthday party for her, complete with presents

and cake

of the ice cream variety, because it is her favorite.

We also went out and played with a bubble maker she got for her birthday. She had a blast.

I love the sheer amount of joy written on her face in this picture. She just had fun running around and being … Sarah.

We also had a birthday party with my extended family, where she was so happy open more presents and have ice cream with M&Ms on top (probably her most-favorite thing in the world).

I love this picture because Sarah was supposed to unwrap the present right next to Grandpa instead of taking it and retreating to her favorite aunt.

Much better.

This one makes me laugh because Sarah is clearly enjoying herself (and the attention of my parents and my sister) and Timothy is clearly bored in the background. Makes me laugh every time.

Some things about Sarah:

She is very particular about certain things. Trash (especially wrapping paper) must go in the trash right away. But yet her toys can be scattered from here to kingdom come and she’s OK with that.

She loves characters from Winnie the Pooh. Her favorite movie right now is “The Tigger Movie.” The other night she couldn’t find all of her stuffed friends in her crib and she cried until we came to make it right. (She sleeps with Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Roo and Eeyore, as well as her cow and Buster the kitty. And occasionally her doggie as well.)

She loves her mommy. Sarah is seriously a Mommy’s girl and sometimes I’m not sure how to take it. She is very possessive of me at times and insistent that I help her — especially singing songs at night.

She loves songs — she will sing to herself on occasion, but mostly loves to be sung to. She just recently learned to dance and will dance when music is played.

She loves to have her own purse and be a girl. She loves to wear pink and skirts and hold baby dolls and stuffed animals. But yet she also likes little cars to carry around in her purse.

She loves her brother — to his distraction sometimes. Sarah is more than willing to play silly simple games endlessly with her brother, much longer than Timothy has patience for at times.

She loves to get into EVERYTHING. If you leave it out, she will try and look at it and hold it and play with it, if she can. (I have a password lock on my phone and all of our computers because of her.)

She loves to read — but mostly with her daddy. (I sing, Daddy reads. OK then.) Even though she has most of her books memorized, she loves to be read to at any opportunity.

This isn’t such a positive thing, but it is her: she screams. Like, screaming using her entire vocal range at times. Not for a long time, usually just for a few words, but I’ve never had to deal with ear-piercing screams before just because she is trying to make a point or something. We’re working on it. (Irony? When she screams, “Stop screaming!” at me. Nice.)

She loves her sleep, but doesn’t like to go to sleep. She still takes a two-hour nap nearly every day (and you can tell when she hasn’t), and sleeps 10-11 hours at night. But getting her to take a nap is full of protests — right up until she falls asleep, naturally.

Turning 3

Oh, and I’m not sure I’ve ever blogged about this, but Sarah graduated from Kids on the Move (the program to help her catch up since she was behind developmentally). She is now on her age level on skills and development. Yay! At her well-child check up, she was 34 pounds (84th percentile) and 39 inches (90th percentile).

Happy birthday, Sarah-barah. We love you!

Funny Things Kids Do, Part 3

Jared got out the camera today when we went up to Grandma and Grandpa’s house for a little Easter dinner get-together. When Timothy saw the camera, he said, “Don’t take a picture of me!” “Why would I take a picture of you?” Jared asked him. “Because I’m cute.” ______ Sarah has discovered how to open and close the drawers to my dresser, and she knows that she isn’t supposed to get in them. The other day when I checked on her, she hurried over and grabbed two of my socks that were on the floor and promptly went over to my dresser where she put the socks back in and then tried to close the drawer. She came back and tried again and was successful. And I didn’t even have to say anything to her. She just saw me and went straight to the scene of the crime and tried to clean up the evidence. ______ Timothy loves to read, and so we let him read in bed before going to sleep at night. He’s only allowed to read until 8:30, which gives him about 45 minutes if he doesn’t ...

That Was Exciting

There is something terribly cute, and at the same time terribly sad, about a baby hospital gown. I now have first-hand experience with it, since Ryan spent a day in the hospital on Timothy’s birthday. (Nice timing, baby boy.) Last Sunday, I could tell that Ryan was getting sick. I had hoped, when I saw that Sarah was congested and a little ill, that Ryan wouldn’t catch it, but he did. At any rate, I wasn’t really worried because Sarah was hardly phased by it and I assumed it was just a mild virus. Well, the difference between 4 years and 4 months readily became apparent on Sunday night. Ryan slept half the night in his swing after getting really fussy about his stuffy nose. He slept comfortably once in his swing, so I didn’t really worry. On Monday, he was needy. It made working interesting, especially since he wouldn’t really play on his own. He spent a lot of time in my arms or in his swing. Monday night, I could tell that he was worse, but didn’t know that there was much I coul...

Something Scary

So this year, Timothy decided that he wanted to be “something scary” for Halloween. We threw out the various options, and he settled on a vampire. (“I don’t want to be a doctor again,” he told me, “because of all the doctor jokes I got last year.” Ooooookay.) He was quite pleased with the results, and enjoyed being scary. I chose to be Hermione from “Harry Potter.” (“Hermione’s hair is long ,” a 7-year-old girl down the street told me – as if this means I can’t be her – and I explained that I cut my hair earlier this year and it hadn’t had a chance to grow back yet. She was somewhat mollified, but not quite. She’s as precocious as Timothy sometimes.) But I won some movie tickets at work for my costume, made with much effort and collaboration with Janet (Thanks, Janet! And Jared made my wand, too.) This is the first year I’ve had all the elements completed (skirt, sweater, tie, scarf, robe and wand). And this is probably what I’ll be next year too. So if it looks familiar, that’s b...
