Top Five Top Fives of 2009

I have been using Google Analytics for quite some time to keep track of what goes on with the blog. There are many interesting (to me) things you can discover. Inspired by Jacob’s post, I thought I would share five different top five lists for 2009.

We’ll start off with the top 5 countries that visitors to our blog came from.

  1. United States
  2. Germany
  3. Belgium
  4. United Kingdom
  5. Canada

And since the United States is way ahead in sending visitors, here is the top five states that people visited from. I could have listed the top five cities as well, but that wouldn’t leave enough room for other fun stats.

  1. Utah
  2. Texas
  3. California
  4. Nevada
  5. Colorado

I’m not sure how many of you will find this interesting, but I thought it was. The top five browser and operating system combinations that people used to visit our blog. You might notice that the percentages don’t add up to 100%, but that’s because they are percentages of all combinations, not just the top five.

  1. Internet Explorer / Windows   51.22%
  2. Firefox / Windows   33.08%
  3. Safari / iPhone   5.77%
  4. Firefox / Macintosh   4.94%
  5. Chrome / Windows   2.50%

These are the top five posts viewed in 2009. This is a bit of a tricky statistic as most visitors read posts on the main page and this list is just those who click through to the post page or otherwise read the comments. While I was going through finding the links for these posts I noticed that three of them were in November. Does that mean that you have more time to read and comment when the weather gets colder?

  1. Obsess Much?
  2. That's Just Gross
  3. Experimenting with Confidence
  4. Work With…or Don’t. That’s Ok Too
  5. Take a Bow

I had a top five ways that people got to the blog, but Marydalene thought that some of you might not want your blogs linked for all of the world (see first top five) to see. I replaced it with the top five days with the most visits. Three of them are Mondays. That reflects that we most often post late Sunday night.

  1. Monday, September 14, 2009
  2. Wednesday, December 30, 2009
  3. Thursday, August 13, 2009
  4. Monday, November 23, 2009
  5. Monday, August 17, 2009

There is much more information available through Google Analytics. I find it quite interesting. It is not difficult to set up, but it does take a small amount of know how. It explains better on the site, but you basically copy and paste a small snippet of code at the bottom of your blog template. You start getting information soon after you put the code in place. If you use Blogger then you already have an account, you just need to start using it.

Funny Things Kids Do, Part 3

Jared got out the camera today when we went up to Grandma and Grandpa’s house for a little Easter dinner get-together. When Timothy saw the camera, he said, “Don’t take a picture of me!” “Why would I take a picture of you?” Jared asked him. “Because I’m cute.” ______ Sarah has discovered how to open and close the drawers to my dresser, and she knows that she isn’t supposed to get in them. The other day when I checked on her, she hurried over and grabbed two of my socks that were on the floor and promptly went over to my dresser where she put the socks back in and then tried to close the drawer. She came back and tried again and was successful. And I didn’t even have to say anything to her. She just saw me and went straight to the scene of the crime and tried to clean up the evidence. ______ Timothy loves to read, and so we let him read in bed before going to sleep at night. He’s only allowed to read until 8:30, which gives him about 45 minutes if he doesn’t ...

That Was Exciting

There is something terribly cute, and at the same time terribly sad, about a baby hospital gown. I now have first-hand experience with it, since Ryan spent a day in the hospital on Timothy’s birthday. (Nice timing, baby boy.) Last Sunday, I could tell that Ryan was getting sick. I had hoped, when I saw that Sarah was congested and a little ill, that Ryan wouldn’t catch it, but he did. At any rate, I wasn’t really worried because Sarah was hardly phased by it and I assumed it was just a mild virus. Well, the difference between 4 years and 4 months readily became apparent on Sunday night. Ryan slept half the night in his swing after getting really fussy about his stuffy nose. He slept comfortably once in his swing, so I didn’t really worry. On Monday, he was needy. It made working interesting, especially since he wouldn’t really play on his own. He spent a lot of time in my arms or in his swing. Monday night, I could tell that he was worse, but didn’t know that there was much I coul...

Something Scary

So this year, Timothy decided that he wanted to be “something scary” for Halloween. We threw out the various options, and he settled on a vampire. (“I don’t want to be a doctor again,” he told me, “because of all the doctor jokes I got last year.” Ooooookay.) He was quite pleased with the results, and enjoyed being scary. I chose to be Hermione from “Harry Potter.” (“Hermione’s hair is long ,” a 7-year-old girl down the street told me – as if this means I can’t be her – and I explained that I cut my hair earlier this year and it hadn’t had a chance to grow back yet. She was somewhat mollified, but not quite. She’s as precocious as Timothy sometimes.) But I won some movie tickets at work for my costume, made with much effort and collaboration with Janet (Thanks, Janet! And Jared made my wand, too.) This is the first year I’ve had all the elements completed (skirt, sweater, tie, scarf, robe and wand). And this is probably what I’ll be next year too. So if it looks familiar, that’s b...
